Health and Safety Policy

Health and Safety Policy

The Management team of ServiceMaster is vitally interested in the health and safety of its employees. Basic health and safety legislation is the minimum standard, and protection of all employees from injury or occupational disease is a major continuing objective. ServiceMaster will make every effort to provide a safe and healthy work environment.

All employees, including Management and Supervisors, have a direct responsibility in prevention. Employees shall comply with the Company’s health and safety requirements as they apply to the design, operation and maintenance of the facility and equipment. Employees will perform their jobs properly in accordance with established procedures and operating standards.

ServiceMaster as employer is ultimately responsible for employee health and safety. Employers are responsible for:

  • taking every action reasonable to make sure the workplace is safe and healthy;
  • posting a copy of the OHSA in the workplace, as well as explanatory material prepared by the Ministry of Labour that outlines the rights, responsibilities and duties of employees;
  • making continual progress toward our goal of no accidents, injuries, or harm to human health and the environment from our products and operations;
  • preparing a written occupational health and safety policy, reviewing that policy at least once a year, setting up and maintaining a program to implement it and posting a copy in the workplace, where employees will be most likely to see it;
  • preparing a workplace violence and harassment policy and reviewing it annually;
  • developing programs supporting workplace harassment and workplace violence policies and including measures and procedures for workers to report incidents of workplace harassment and workplace violence, and set out how the employer will investigate and deal with incidents or complaints;
  • appointing competent persons as Managers or Supervisors;
  • informing an employee, or a person with authority over an employee, about any hazard in the workplace and train that employee in the handling, storage, use, disposal and transport of any equipment, substances, tools, material, etc.;
  • ensuring that an employee, not connected with Management, is designated as the worker representative of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC);
  • providing the personal protective equipment that is needed and make sure it works properly;
  • helping the JHSC in carrying out their functions and providing them with the results of any occupational health and safety reports that the employer has;
  • working with the JHSC to ensure compliance with the OHSA and acceptable industry standards; and
  • assisting in medical emergencies by providing any information—including confidential business information—to a qualified medical practitioner and other prescribed persons for the purpose of diagnosis or treatment.

Management will be held accountable for the health and safety of all employees and, as such, are responsible to ensure that the workplace is safe and that all employees work in compliance with established safe work practices and procedures. In addition to the responsibilities listed below for employees, Management must also:

  • take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of employees;
  • ensure that employees comply with the OHSA and regulations;
  • ensure that employees work in compliance with established safe work practices and procedures;
  • ensure that any equipment, protective device or clothing required by the employer is used or worn by the employee;
  • advise employees of any potential or actual health or safety dangers known by the Supervisor;
  • ensure employees use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing required by ServiceMaster;
  • ensure employees receive adequate training in their specific work tasks to protect their health and safety;
  • if prescribed, provide employees with written instructions about the measures and procedures to be taken for the employee’s protection; and
  • instruct, inform and supervise employees to protect their health and safety.

All employees are responsible for protecting their own health and safety by working in compliance with the law and safe work practices and procedures established by ServiceMaster. Employees have the right to refuse to perform tasks they deem to be unsafe without the threat of punishment. All employees are responsible for:

  • working in compliance with the OHSA, regulations, and internal policies and procedures;
  • using or wearing any equipment, protective devices or clothing required by the employer;
  • reporting to Management or the worker JHSC representative any known missing or defective equipment or protective device that may endanger the employee or another employee;
  • reporting any hazard or contravention of the OHSA or regulations to the Supervisor or the JHSC;
  • not using or operating any equipment, machinery, or devices or otherwise working in a manner that may endanger anyone;
  • attending all required health and safety training programs (e.g. WHMIS, orientation) and applying knowledge to daily operating procedures;
  • not removing or making any protective device ineffective required by the employer or by the regulations; and
  • not engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.

The main role of the JHSC is to monitor the health, safety and welfare of employees working for ServiceMaster. The JHSC is responsible for:

  • connecting the employer and employees together when it comes to addressing health and safety concerns in the workplace;
  • identifying actual and potential hazards in the workplace;
  • identifying and evaluating concerns;
  • reviewing incident reports and inspections to make recommendations for corrective actions;
  • promoting health and safety in the workplace; and
  • participating in workplace inspections.

Communication, consultation and co-operation between all levels in the organization is vitally important to an effective Health and Safety policy. It is in the best interest of all parties to consider health and safety in every aspect of daily activity. Commitment to health and safety must form an integral part of ServiceMaster’s culture.

Review of this policy and all other health and safety policies will be done on an annual basis. ServiceMaster has a commitment to providing all employees with a safe and healthy work environment, and doing so commits to provide adequate funding to our health and safety program.
